Bike Lab got me moving
by Jat Hamachek, age 14
My name is Jat and I go to school at the Center for Appropriate Transport, also known as CAT. Recently I built up my first bike using some of the skills I learned in my Bike Lab class. I had a good time doing it, but it wasn’t all fun and games. I really learned a lot.
To begin, I had to pick out a frame, so I chose a green BMX frame with a fork from the storage area in Eugene Bicycle Works. Then I had to find the right components. Finally, I built the bike up in about two hours on a Saturday afternoon.
I paid for the bike mostly from credits I earned doing Valet Bike Parking at concerts in Eugene this summer. I am proud that I built a bike by myself. I could not have done it a year ago.
